In an era of cruddy "prequels", they masterfully figured out a "reboot" scenario that was believable and allowed them to honor and pay tribute to the original casting and characters, yet gave themselves plausible permission to take the franchise any direction they wanted...
Brilliant!
P.S. Wasn't Karl Urban fantastic as McCoy?
P.S.S. I also loved they was the Kirk actor (I forget his name) avoided the temptation to act to "Shatnerish" until the final scene on the Bridge. Then he let it fly, all the way up to the way he said "Bones!" and crossed his legs in the command chair. Even the sideburns were a bit more trimmed - all intentional and totally cool.
